Internship

Texas State University

Sociological Department

Dr. Christopher Johnson

January 2018 - May 2018

Dr. Christopher Johnson has an extensive educational background in sociology that has given him insight into both aging and dementia care. Dr. Johnson currently has a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Denver, a master’s degree in Sociology with a major in Aging from the University of Northern Iowa, as well as a Ph.D. in Sociology with a major in Aging and Family and a minor in Social Psychology from Iowa State University. He was the Director of Gerontology at the University of Louisiana, he taught Dementia Studies at the University of Stirling in Scotland and is now part of the master’s program at Texas State for Dementia and Aging Studies.

My internship with Dr. Johnson focused on researching topics related to dementia, aging in place, nursing homes, and different care options available. We had multiple special projects including working to create an updated book about dementia studies, identifying radio stations who would be interested in partnering with Dr. Johnson to do a segment about dementia care, working on an article about the McDonaldization of nursing homes, and planning and organizing a seminar about the effect of architectural design on nursing home residents with a focus on those with dementia.

We were also able to partner with Kindred Hospice to create a dementia and aging care and resource guide for care partners in Hays, Comal, and Guadalupe county.
