The Mutual Adoption Program (MAP) Program

The purpose of the MAP program is to match a student with an elder in the community in order to address the issue of loneliness and lack of aid most elder’s experience.

I was partnered with Miss Marie and Ronnie at the Price Center in San Marcos, Texas.

The Price center is a multigenerational facility that holds different events, fundraisers, charities, and allows different organizations to rent the building for their own events.

My work included event planning, data entry, transferring physical to digital files, redesigned their website, volunteering in the Tea Room to help serve and clean after lunch was held, helping with finding a replacement to take over at the price center when Miss Marie and Ronnie retired, as well as recording the minutes for meetings held by the Price Center Committee. Some of the events planned included a concert by Terri Hendricks with a special recitation of Judy Kellersberger’s “San Marcos Song” by Miss Marie, a production of Les Miserables, multiple poetry readings, the monthly Community Flea Market, and the Hands of Hope annual Tea Party which donates the funds raised from the event to underprivileged women to receive an education.

After the retirement of Miss Marie and Ronnie, Clay DeStefano was placed in charge of The Price Center has since partnered with the Mermaid Society of San Marcos, a grassroots community organization that was created to help support river guardianship, historic preservation, the arts, and local business. We have since held events such as parades and fundraisers to help keep the river clean. They have also set up art galleries within the price center on different occasions to raise money and awareness about the river.

5K Stampede - Dr. Oren Renick

I volunteered at the 5K Stampede as an event planner who was in charge of set up, clean up, and registering participants. The proceeds from the race went towards the National Volunteer Caregiving Network which helps elders in the community remain independent and helps them to age in place in their own homes.
